kevin appel

Wild, mind-bending perspectives and angular forms seem like something out of a science fiction movie, but make no mistake–artist Kevin Appel isn’t afraid to mix in more organic, playful elements into his work. The hardest thing to do is to figure out which way is up in his paintings–but if you relax and just take it in as a whole, such “logical” perceptions cease to matter.

Kevin’s mixing of the natural and manmade worlds isn’t just a fluke; he’s clearly contrasting and mixing the way the two worlds interact (and sometimes don’t interact with each other); the result is something completely new, a medley of modernist architecture and tree limbs, of ruler-straight lines and purposely uneven brushstrokes. I love Kevin’s work, and I hope you do too–the paintings above come from the Marianne Boesky gallery, but he also has work at NYMOMA and LACMA.
