girls! art by carla sonheim

Carla Sonheim’s GIRLS! artwork is dedicated to what she calls the “special and fleeting innocence of girlhood”, and has such a beautiful yet cutesy appeal to it that I instantly knew it needed a feature all its own. Her work is appreciated by the Etsy community as a whole, with over 1500 items sold; I think a large part of this is due to the affordability of her art (they start from $6), but to say that her popularity is due to mere pricing would be an overstatement.

Carla’s work has a charming simplicity to it, and her characters are often found staring straight at you with bewildered expressions. I think it’s these expressions, these “caught in the act” moments that account for a large part of the success of her pieces. It’s nearly impossible to ignore as you wonder, “Well just what exactly is she doing?” in the same way you wonder fondly about your own children as they discover life’s simple pleasures.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Carla transfers many of her paintings onto white cotton; this not only gives her art a unique texture and tactility, but also allows you to sew them onto your own projects. Appealing to both adults and children, Carla’s shop is definitely work a look if you’re shopping for yourself or for someone else. Please stop by her Etsy shop here!
